Family Sponsorship
Second largest category of Canadian Immigration, after economic immigration relatives can live, study and work in Canada if they become permanent residents of Canada. You can sponsor certain relatives to come to Canada if you’re at least 18 years old and a: Canadian citizen or person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act or permanent resident of Canada.
The Government of Canada is firmly committed to keeping the families together, for which they have allowed families to be sponsored for Canadian immigration. If a Canadian permanent resident or citizen has a family member whom they want to immigrate to Canada, they can sponsor them. Reuniting the family remains one of the pillars of the Canadian immigration system.
The Canadian government offers various sponsorship programs for Canadian citizens or permanent residence holders to sponsor the dependent family members. When the dependents attain the Canadian PR status, they can live, study or work in Canada.
Eligibility Criteria
You can only sponsor an individual family member or a relative to Canada if you’re at least 18 years old and are a
- Citizen of Canada, or
- Permanent resident of Canada
- Registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian-Indian Act
If you meet these criteria, you can sponsor your close family member to Canada.
Who can you sponsor?
In the Canadian government, you’re allowed to sponsor your family members which have been defined as parents, grandparents, children, adopted children, brothers and sisters only. In Canada, being a dependent is a serious commitment and requires a positive balance sheet of a sort. The financial background of the two parties in question will also be taken into account.
You can also sponsor orphaned grandchild, brother, sister, nephew, or niece if:
- You have blood relation or relation by adoption with that family member, and
- Both the mother and father of the family members have died, and
- They are aged under 18 years, and
- They are unmarried or in a conjugal relationship.
If a particular family member meets all the requirements mentioned above, you will be free to sponsor them to live in Canada.
Also, you cannot sponsor them if they fall in any of the criteria mentioned below:
- One of their parents is alive
- No one knows the whereabouts of their parents
- They have a guardian or caretaker while their parents are still alive
- They have been abandoned by their parents
- Their parents are detained or are in jail for whatever reason
You can also sponsor one relative (related by birth or adoption), of any age, if you meet the requirements mentioned below:
- You don’t have any other living relatives such as spouse, parents, grandparents, siblings, orphaned niece or nephew, you could sponsor.
- You don’t have any other relatives in Canada who are:
- Canadian Citizens
- Permanent Canadian Citizens
- Registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian-Indian Act
